Succinct arguments are central cryptographic objects, underlying applications such as blockchains, image authentication, and, more recently, AI safety. Almost all succinct arguments used in practice follow the commit-and-open paradigm introduced by Kilian (STOC 1992). Decades of work have generalized and optimized this paradigm, yet the security it provably achieves in the standard model remains unclear.
Existing analyses proceed by rewinding and leave a gap: strict-time analyses lose an inverse-polynomial factor, while the sharper expected-time analyses apply only to a special case of the paradigm. In this talk, we close this gap, giving matching upper and lower bounds on the security of commit-and-open succinct arguments.
Based on joint work with Alessandro Chiesa, Ziyi Guan, and Yuetian Wu.
Ziyi Guan will also be present.
