Yang Liu, an assistant professor in Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science, has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award for his research advancing the mathematical foundations of algorithms, optimization and data analysis.

The NSF CAREER program is the foundation's most prestigious award for early career faculty members. It supports researchers who demonstrate the potential to serve as academic leaders through the integration of outstanding research and education.

Liu, a faculty member in the Computer Science Department, studies theoretical computer science, mathematics and algorithms, with interests spanning graph algorithms, optimization, high-dimensional geometry and additive combinatorics. His CAREER project will develop new mathematical tools for solving large-scale computational problems involving networks, decision-making and hidden patterns in data. The work includes new approaches to optimization in networks, with potential long-term applications in logistics, telecommunications and artificial intelligence, as well as foundational research examining how weak patterns in complex data can reveal underlying structure.
