CMU will celebrate the launch of the Machine Learning for Social Good fund on Tuesday, Sept. 26.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto will sit down with Brad Keywell, Uptake CEO, for a fireside chat about cities as centers of innovation and other issues as Carnegie Mellon University celebrates the launch of the Machine Learning for Social Good fund.

The event will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, in the Rangos Ballroom of the Cohon University Center, and will be followed by a reception. Interim Provost Laurie Weingart, Machine Learning Department Head Manuela Veloso and Professor Roni Rosenfeld of the Machine Learning Department and Language Technologies Institute will also make remarks.

The event is open to faculty and graduate students only. Please register.

Uptake, a Chicago-based predictive analytics software company, donated $1 million to start the Machine Learning for Social Good fund, which Rosenfeld oversees. The fund will provide opportunities for faculty and students to apply their expertise in data science and machine learning to initiatives that benefit the public sector.

In 2016, Uptake launched beyond.uptake, a philanthropic and civic innovation arm that leverages the power of data to solve critical problems for social sector organizations.

The CMU AI initiative is advancing artificial intelligence research and education by leveraging the School of Computer Science's strengths in computer vision, machine learning, robotics, natural language processing and human-computer interaction.
